Low-carbon diet and anti-global warming ways in daily life 2015-05-25 11:51:23
I attended a class named “Low-carbon diet and anti-global warming” at Civil Service Development Institute, Tainan City Government on May 26th last year. At the course I learned knowledge about “low-carbon diet” and how to fulfill it in daily life. The teacher told us many examples and ways to follow to reduce the waste of carbon dioxide (CO2) and greenhouse-gas and many other kinds of natural resources.

A simple way to live environmental friendly and more healthy is to reduce meat but more vegetable in daily meals. Besides, to focus on and count the food miles which means the distance between where the food is produced and where you get that food is also a good way to implement low-carbon diet. In general case, the less the food miles take, the less the amount of carbon produces. But in some cases, even the food is native, it may produce more carbon emissions than imported food because of their cultivate ways such as greenhouse culture or with fertilization. Therefore, based on the concept of food miles to choose low-carbon food, it is better to eat food which is local and in current season. Local food is more fresh and good at keeping its nutrition and not being destroyed for preserving, transporting and other reasons, so it do good for human health. As for the current season food, it is comparatively cheaper and with less agriculture drug or chemicals.

Global-warming causes environmental changes and ecological breakage, so to treasure natural resources and protect our living environment is very important. Actions to take to slow down global warming are to save energy and reduce carbon. We can choose some simple ways to change our living habit and reduce the amount of emissions of carbon dioxide such as eating food which is environmental-friendly. In this way, we could not only eat fresh and delicious food, but also protect global environment. In addition, there are many ways to the aspect about saving energy and reducing carbon emissions, for example, we can save water by using it smart such as watering by reusing water. Moreover, we could use less air-conditioner, turn off lights and unplug when leaving, use green environmental tableware, take kettle and handkerchief, take public transport or take a walk or ride a bike to replace drive by self, and etc.

While feeding livestock must have some land, especially feeding cattle must have lots of land to plant pasture. Besides, there is methane (CH4) contained in cow’s fart which may cause air temperature rise and produce greenhouse gases, and then accelerate to bring about global warming. Consequently, to cope with global warming and for personal health, we must change our daily life habit and take actions based on low-carbon diet and low-carbon dioxide emissions.

A singer named James Paul McCartney of the famous rock band “Beatles” and other few famous chefs launch a campaign named “Meat Free Monday” in view of the idea of cutting meat for saving energy and reduce carbon produced. The Society of Wilderness (荒野保護協會) and Homemakers Union Consumers Cooperation (主婦聯盟) called out community groups and government to response this activity in the last few days. According to the statistics of Environmental Protection Administration, it could reduce almost seven kilograms amount of carbon emissions in average by eating no meat a day every person.

Proposal taken by other counties or public sectors include “Meat Free Monday” in Taipei City and “five vegetable and fruit every day” by Department of Health, promoting environmental protection restaurant authentication and mark combined with Google Map which restaurant location information could be provided for the general public by New Taipei City. Education advocacy of low-carbon diet combined with village and community and summer camp of low-carbon in family units both handled by Hsinchu County advocates that it’s better to choose local, in season, less manual processing ingredients food and in energy saving cooking ways with uncomplicated packages. Moreover, Tainan City Government promotes cultural sightseeing and consumption of low-carbon, and also promotes the carbon reduction certification mark of “more low-calorie vegetables” with the catering industries for creating green food environment. Besides, low-carbon healthy meals contests are usually held by the authority.

I’m pleasured to join the course, from which I really learned a lot about low-carbon diet and many ways to take to avoid producing greenhouse-gases. After the course, I’m also thankful to Civil Service Development Institute for preparing “low-carbon lunch” for us, and it’s really healthy and delicious. Overall, I think this course is very helpful for us to carry out low-carbon diet and provide tips to live in environmental-friendly ways in our workplace and daily life. On one hand, I could advocate and demonstrate the actions and concept of reducing global warming to my colleague and the general public, and on the other hand, I could also pass the idea about low-carbon produced guides to my family and friends such as using disposable-free tableware.
