|◎課後感想："Coaching English"－Making English Fun
by Chang, Ching-Yu, Ethnic Affairs Commission, Tainan City Government
As we know, Tainan is the island’s oldest city with its culture and history and natives take great pride in traditional delicacies. With more and more people coming from everywhere visit this city, the City Mayor has claimed that we have to promote Tainan city as an international city and to boost city tourism. Therefore, one of the strategies is making English as the city’s second official language.
To achieve this goal, Civil Service Development Institute has scheduled series of English courses all year round. For me, I always have interest in learning different languages, when I know that I have to attend "English Seed Course" every Monday from May 04 to June 29, I always expect the moment to come. Yet to learn English is one thing, to coach others to learn English is another, I do wonder how can I play this role in my office after training？However, I thought I have to devote myself to it and try every effort to learn as much as I can.
With my strong curiosity in the first class－"Class Orientation and Motivation", the graceful teacher, Assistant Professor Chen, started to elucidate the concept of “Coaching English” . We were divided into several groups and warmed up with an ice-breaking activity by describing our working backgrounds and personal characteristics to introduce each other among group members. Luckily, my partners are all friendly with fluent spoken English, like Mr. Ken and Miss Eight are so proactive and humorous that helps us quickly build a joyous atmosphere of learning.
In the second week, the teacher asked everyone to read the article chosen by ourselves and gave us feedback about pronunciation and intonation respectively. Some of us are suggested to write diaries in order to practice how to describe our feelings, opinions and thoughts well. As we can see, if you lack of motivations to study English and don’t know what to read, the best way is to get online to search something that really interest you, then read shorter passage, and share the story with your friends.
Not only taking three-hour English courses and interacting with group members in English, but also we have assignments needed to complete in every week. The content of assignments is designed to make ourselves further understand the way we learn English and to meet the needs of establishing an English-friendly environment in the future. Of course, it is significantly useful to me and people want to learn English, I then followed the instruction written in the handout to share with my three colleagues.
At first, I was very afraid that my coworkers have no willingness to write the assignment, because everyone is busy in their work and it is still not so necessary for us to use English in our workplace. While surprisingly, they are happy to do this assignment as well and also give me feedback, making me become more confident to encourage more colleagues to engage in English learning. For example, the topic of Week 2 assignment has discussed about “How many signals in our office can be made in English?” As one of my coworkers put these, “No Soliciting”, “Clock in and Clock out” or “TGIF"（Thank God it's Friday）are all good ideas. Now we start to plan to print out everyone’s English name to make our workplace embed in English environment.
Moreover, in the following courses, our class will be going to experience some physical activities related to a teaching program－"Leadership and Coaching" which is absolutely new to me. I can imagine that it will be more fun in the following week, and our team members, eight of us coming from different departments, will get to know each other more and communicate in English in different way. In addition, after finishing the training, partners may cooperate together to hold a interior English study club for both departments to keep learning English and it would be not so embarrassed or feel shy if you have to speak English in front of only your own colleagues. In terms of the importance of human connections, I will say this course has offered this advantage for us to do this long-term English- improved project.
Even though this course aims to develop the project of "English as the second official language on Tainan City Government" and hopes all the well-trained students continue to encourage their coworkers to study English, however, we don’t need to regard it as a pressure, just have fun and relax, don’t be afraid to make any mistake while we speaking English. In addition, we had better seize every opportunity to look up new words in your dictionary or check it online, sooner or later; we will find that learning English is just a way to enrich your life.
Finally, I herein share some references of English learning introduced by our English teacher with everyone who wants to advance English proficiency; they are: “Voice America”, “BBC”（Learning English）, “TED”（YouTube）, “Voice Tube” and “ESL". As long as you can access to Internet, making use of these resources to gain more English learning materials can be very helpful for you.
