Ⅰ. Opening & Tainan coming-of-age ceremony
Hello everyone! We are team Mango. Before we start to tell you all the secrets, I want to ask some questions. You all know that Tainan is a cultural city, but do you know what is the age that we grow up as an adult? Do you ever wonder why sword-lion is shown in Anping? And have you ever been to Yan-shui to attend the activity of beehive fireworks? Well, today we like to share those traditions with you. Let’s check out!
First, I want to talk about coming-of-age. “Tainan coming-of-age ceremony” is an important custom of Tainan. Every year, when the lunar calendar goes to Qixi, the Government hold a lot of activities on this particular day. Why was this custom created? In the past, due to economic conditions, children often went to work to make money for their families after graduating from elementary school. And when children turned sixteen, they were treated as an adult and could receive full pay. At that time, it meant a lot to the family and especially to the child.
So how do we perform the ceremony to show the traditional rite of passage? I want to play 2 short videos for you.

The Chi-Niang-Ma pavilion is burned at the end of the ceremony, symbolizing the maturation and independence of the child. This is a unique tradition and also is a significant part of intangible culture. Next, Jefferson will tell you about sword-lion. To be continued.

Ⅱ. The tradition of Anping Sword-lion
When Koxinga led the troops to land at Luermen , to protect themselves against the Dutch muskets, the soldiers all carried reinforced shields with the metal installed in the center . What’smore, to intimidate the enemy the soldiers decorated the shields with the image of the fierce lions. It woked in the war.
After the Dutch lost the battle and left Taiwan, Koxinga deployed some of his naval fleets in Anping. Legend has it that when the soldiers finished their drill and went home, they hung their lion-emblazoned shields in front of their doors and placed their swords near the lion’s mouth . When the thieves spotted the lion-emblazoned shiels, they knew there were stong soldiers inside. They realized this was no place to mess around. From then on, it has become a tradition that the villagers always decorated the image of sword lion on the doorway to keep them safe.
In fact the directions of the sword have different meaning. When the sword points to the right side, it means the host is praying for blessings. When the sword points to the left side ,it can block evil spirits. However no matter which way the sword points, bringing good fortune and protecting their home are what people truly wish for.
Now it is nancy turn to introduce Yanshui beehive fireworks festival.

Ⅳ. Conclusion
Thank you. Team Mango still have three important things to remind everyone.
1. In recent years, Tainan City Government is encouraging citizens to perform the “Tainan coming-of-age ceremony” at home. The rite seems very complicated! However, you can check the video as the slide shows [point toward the screen] (Yeah, my team has prepared QR-Code, you can watch it right now), this video shows you basic instruction.

2. About Anping Sword-lion. Remember, never stole sword-lions or keep them like pets, even they are so cute. Many young artists in Anping have created a lot of works inspired from Anping Sword-lion, we strongly suggest buying these cultural products, instead of taking away the original “lions.”

3. Do you want to join Yanshui Beehive Fireworks? Maybe your parents will stop you. They said, “Hey, it’s too crazy! It’s god damn dangerous.” In fact, if you fully prepare the protective equipment, this religious activity is very safe and “fashion”. [point toward the screen] (Look, everyone looks like Bomberman)
Finally, what we really want to say is that Tainan have many unique traditions, people living in Tainan enjoy these customs at their daily life. Tainan is not just living in the past, but also living in the real moment.

That’s all. We are Team Mango. Thanks for your attention.
